Your media library is most useful when it shows up inside the tools you already work in. The Tagbox.io MCP connects your photos and videos to AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT, and to Slack, so they can search, organize, and add to your library for you. This guide walks through connecting it to each one, step by step.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI tools securely talk to apps like Tagbox.io. Think of it as a universal adapter: connect it once, and your assistant can work with your library directly, with no exporting, downloading, or copy-paste.
Get your Tagbox.io MCP URL
Before connecting anything, grab your workspace's MCP URL. You'll paste this same URL into every tool below.
- In Tagbox.io, go to Settings → API & MCP.
- Create an API key if you don't have one yet.
- Copy your MCP URL.
Your MCP URL contains your API key, so treat it like a password. Anyone who has it can reach your library. Don't post it anywhere public or share it outside your team.
The connection is scoped to your workspace and respects your existing permissions.
Connect to Claude
Works in Claude on the web and in Claude Desktop, on Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
- Open Claude and go to Settings → Connectors.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Give it a name like Tagbox.io and paste your MCP URL.
- Click Add, then Connect.
- In any chat, open the + menu, choose Connectors, and toggle Tagbox.io on.
On Team and Enterprise plans, only a workspace Owner can add the connector for everyone. Once they do, each member clicks Connect to start using it.
Connect to ChatGPT
Available through ChatGPT's Developer mode on paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education), on the web.
- In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Connectors. If you don't see custom connectors yet, turn on Developer mode under Settings → Connectors → Advanced.
- Click Create.
- Enter a name like Tagbox.io, paste your MCP URL, and add a short description.
- Connect, then review the tools it offers and toggle on the ones you want.
- To use it, start a chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode, and select Tagbox.io.
Connect to Slack
Slack connects the Tagbox.io MCP to Slackbot, so your team can search and pull from your library right inside a Slack thread. A workspace admin sets this up once.
- In Slack, open your workspace's MCP settings and choose to add an MCP server.
- Enter a name like Tagbox.io and paste your MCP URL.
- For Auth Type, choose No auth, since your key is already part of the URL. Save.
- Each team member connects their account once to start using it.
From then on, anyone can ask Slackbot to find or add assets without leaving Slack.
What your assistant can do
Once it's connected, your assistant works with your library the way a colleague would.
- Find things - free text, plus tags, collections, people, colors, star ratings, dates, file type, or a similar image.
- Tag and rate - add or remove tags across a batch of files, and set a 1-5 star rating. Ratings read back, so "rate the keepers five" and "now show me everything still unrated" work as one flow.
- Tidy your taxonomy - create, rename and delete tags and tag categories, and move tags between them.
- Build collections - create one, add or remove files, rename it.
- Name people - your library groups faces on its own; your assistant can put names to them, then find that person's photos.
- Read transcriptions - pull the full transcript of a video or audio file, with timestamps, to summarize it or find a quote.
- Set up guest upload links - with the tags, collections and expiry already filled in.
- Add and edit files - upload from a URL, or fix a file's name and description.
Two things worth knowing. Files whose usage rights have expired come back blocked - your assistant can't open them, share them, or pass them to another tool, so the rules you set in Copyrights hold here too. And when a tool needs to fetch an asset directly, your assistant can publish it as a public link; it will ask you first, and you can revoke the link whenever you like.
Try your first prompt
Once you're connected, just ask in plain language. A few to start with:
- "Find our three newest product photos and add alt text to each."
- "Pull the best summer-collection shots for the July newsletter."
- "Tag every black dress as LBD."
- "Build a collection of our outdoor event photos from last month."
- "Rate these five stars, then show me anything still unrated."
- "Move all our city tags into a Locations category."
- "Summarize what's said in last week's webinar recording."
Tips
- You can connect the same MCP URL to more than one tool at a time.
- You can connect multiple workspaces using multiple MCP connectors.
- New tools don't appear on their own. If you connected before an update, reconnect Tagbox.io in your assistant to pick up the latest ones.
- Your API key carries permissions. A read-only key can search and read but can't tag, rate or delete - check the key in Settings → API & MCP if a write action doesn't go through.
- If you ever need to cut off access, delete the API key in Settings → API & MCP and the connection stops working everywhere.
