Tagbox API

Connect your library to your own software

The Tagbox.io API lets you connect your media library to your own software. Search, upload, tag, and organize your photos and videos programmatically, and build galleries, dashboards, and custom tools on top of your library. It's also the foundation our MCP and other integrations are built on.

🎉

We're actively building out the API and adding to it over time. If there's something you'd like it to do, or something that could work better, we'd love to hear it - email us at hello@tagbox.io. Your feedback directly shapes what we build next.

Getting your API key

💡

The API is available to Pro and Enterprise subscribers.

  1. Go to Settings → API & MCP.
  1. Create a new API key.
  1. Copy it and store it somewhere safe. Treat it like a password - anyone with your key can access your library.

You can delete a key at any time from the same screen, which immediately cuts off any tool using it.

What you can do

The API gives you programmatic access to the core of Tagbox.io:

  • Search your library with AI search and filters, including by star rating.
  • Upload photos and videos.
  • Read and manage your tags and collections.
  • Tag and rate files, and reorganize your tag categories.
  • Read transcriptions of your videos and audio files.
  • Create guest upload links so external collaborators can add files.
  • Build on top of your library - galleries, internal dashboards, or custom apps powered by your real, organized media.

Your Copyrights rules apply here too. Files whose usage rights have expired come back blocked, so anything you build on the API respects the same restrictions your team sees in the app.

For the full list of endpoints, request formats, and responses, see our interactive API reference. You can read each endpoint's details and try calls right from the page.

Prefer to work through AI?

If you'd rather have an AI assistant work with your library instead of writing code, the Tagbox.io MCP is built on this same API. It connects your library to Claude, ChatGPT, and Slack, so you can search, tag, and pull assets with plain prompts.
